2/21/2012 – On 2-21-2012 the Blades Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an accident with injuries on Bethel Concord Rd south-east of town. 71 Command (C. Passwaters) arrived on scene to find a car that had collided with the side of a flat bed tractor trailer that was pulling out of a driveway. The driver of the car was severely trapped inside the car which came to rest underneath the flat bed trailer. Rescue 71 arrived and the crews stabilized the vehicle and began accessing the rescue operation. Command requested fire crews from Sta.81 Laurel and Sta.87 Seaford to the scene for lighting and help with the rescue. With EMS inside the vehicle stabilizing the patient the crew of Rescue 71 was able to connect a winch cable to the vehicle and try and pull the vehicle out from underneath the tractor trailer. Delaware State Police Medevac responded and landed in a nearby yard. Crews work for nearly 45 minutes to free the driver. The patient was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford for life threatening injuries suffered from the accident. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured and refused treatment at the scene.
Fire Police from Sta.71 Blades closed down Bethel Concord Rd during the call. Delaware State Police Reconstruction Team was requested to the scene to investigate.
