5/19/2009 – On May 19, 2009 at 1050 hours, Kent County Rescue Box 20-13 was dispatched for a motor vehicle collision with entrapment on US Route 301 north of Millington Rd.
Units arrived to find a van pulling a utility trailer that had struck the rear of a stake body truck belonging to a crew stripping the area roadways. The stake body truck had a ‘safe zone’ apparatus on the rear to protect the truck from rear collisions. Subsequent to the collision, the driver of the van was heavily entrapped by the legs. To complicate matters, the van was full of paint used to stripe driveways that had spilled. This caused fumes to build up inside the van.
Rescuers from Millington and Galena Fire Companies worked multiple tools to free the victim. Once free, the subject was transported to Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police Trooper 6 with serious leg injuries. The driver of the stake body truck was transported locally for neck and back injuries. Also the provider inside the van was transported to a local hospital following his exposure to the fumes, for a medical clearance.
Units on the scene were Kent County Rescue 2, Rescue Pumper 3, Engine 3 (Landing zone), Ambulance 2, Ambulance 3, Special Unit 2, Kent County ALS and Queen Annes County Ambulance 7. Maryland State police are handling the investigation.
