3/21/2009 – At 0800 hours on Saturday, March 21, 2009, the Berlin Fire Company hosted a drill consisting of ‘Saving Your Own’ drills and live fire evolutions to conclude with burning the structure down for the homeowner. Members of Berlin, Showell and Ocean Pines, along with a few from Ocean City and instructors from Strike The Box Training were in attendance. The drill began with Trevor Steedman and Tim Jerscheid demonstrating ladder bailouts and tool bailouts using personal escape rope. These two ‘Saving Your Own’ techniques are quick ways for a firefighter to exit a building, should that be the only exit available. After a short break, fire company officers and members of Strike the Box Training conducted live fire evolutions in order to allow firefighters the opportunity to simulate making an offensive attack on an interior fire. After several groups completed the live fire evolutions, crews evacuated the building at which time crews placed protective handlines in service and allowed the structure to burn to the ground, at the homeowners request. Thanks to everyone that helped make the drill possible, as well as to everyone that participated. A special thanks to Trevor Steedmand and Tim Jerscheid for a great day of training. Every day is a training day!!!
