Donald I. Wheatley
Sharptown Fire Dept
8/22/2008 - SHARPTOWN -- Donald I. Wheatley, 77, of Sharptown died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

He was born May 15, 1931, in Sharptown to the late David L. and Emma Mae Owens Wheatley.

After graduating from Mardela High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. While in the Air Force he married Annabelle Louise Riggin on Sept. 18, 1953. After his service in the Air Force, during the Korean War, he was honorably discharged in 1955. He was then employed at J.I. Wells Lumber Co. in Salisbury for many years as a truck driver. On June 3, 1973, he started the Donald I. Wheatley Trucking Co. Inc. and was affiliated with the J.V. Wells Lumber Co. in Sharptown until 2006, when he sold his trucking company.

He was a member of Dor-Wic Post 218 of the American Legion in Sharptown, Sharptown Fire Department, Roelma Lodge 206 AF&AM of Sharptown and Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Diana L. Walker and her husband, Joe, of Sharptown; two grandsons, Jeffrey ''Donald'' Walker and Dana Lynn Walker, both of Sharptown; a brother, Herman D. Wheatley of Sharptown; and a half sister, Nancy Wheatley Gordy of Galestown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle L. Wheatley, on Jan. 26, 2004; and a brother, Robert W. Wheatley.

A viewing will be held this evening from 7-9 at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Sharptown, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Pastor Everett Landon will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Alfred Taylor. Burial will follow the services at Sharptown Firemen's Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.
