Atley Allen Lankford Jr
Sharptown Fire Dept
8/15/2008 - SHARPTOWN -- Atley Allen Lankford Jr. of Sharptown went to his home in heaven on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.


Born Dec. 29, 1921, in Sharptown, he was a son of the late Atley A. Lankford Sr. and Mabel Windsor Lankford.


He was a 1939 graduate of Sharptown High School and worked for a short time at DuPont in Seaford. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he volunteered for submarine service. After four years, he was discharged and returned to DuPont where he was employed for 40 more years.


He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Sharptown, where he was a member of the choir and served on the Board of Trustees. He was a charter member of Dor-Wic American Legion Post 218 and a life member of Sharptown Volunteer Fire Company. He was an avid runner and enjoyed the outdoors and fishing.


He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lankford; a son, Allen Lankford of Sharptown; a daughter, Claire Foskey of Salisbury, N.C.; three grandsons, Burt Foskey and Jason and Christopher Lankford; one great-granddaughter, Layla Foskey; two sisters, Charlotte Wootten of Salisbury and Alice Smith of Quantico; a brother, Paul Lankford of California; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lynn, Mark and Scott Lankford; and a sister, Rita Lankford.


A graveside service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Sharptown Fireman's Cemetery. Pastor James Penuel III will officiate.


Memorial donations may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, PO Box 85, Sharptown, Md. 21861; or Sharptown Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 307, Sharptown, Md. 21861.


The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements
